Izaki Metropoulos is a multi-instrumentalist with nearly twenty years of experience focusing on Greek folk music, Rebetiko, and Laïkó. He primarily plays violin and guitar and has performed in five countries and over 30 U.S. cities, appearing regularly at festivals and events dedicated to traditional music. His repertoire also includes Balkan and Ottoman classical influences, and he has worked with various ensembles at folk festivals across the country.
Izaki will teach one class in Kantades of Kefallonia & Zakynthos: Multipart Folk Serenades. Students will engage with both the music and the historical context of these islands. Sheet music for different voice parts will be provided; sight-reading is a plus but not required. Instruments such as guitar, mandolin, and accordion are welcome.
Izaki will join his sister Sophia to present a second class in The Folk Guitar in Laïkó: Rhythm, Repertoire, and Accompaniment, a hands-on course centered on the use of the laïkí kithára (folk guitar) in Greek popular music, including Laïkó and Rebetiko traditions. Focus will be on rhythm, accompaniment techniques, and stylistic nuance. Other string instruments are welcome to participate.
