Yiddish folk song condenses all the emotion, humor, and salty directness of Yiddish language and culture. Song style includes breath-based ornaments, free changes in register and rhythm, flexible melodies, and ornaments such as the krekhts (sob), zifts (sigh) and dreydlekh (turns). In this online workshop we’ll listen deeply to some great Yiddish folksingers, learn songs together, and explore stylistic techniques. We’ll also survey Yiddish song resources that participants can enjoy at home.
